Vienna is Austria’s capital and the main city of the country. It is located in the southeastern part of Central Europe and is close to Hungary, The Czech Republic and Slovakia. In 2001, because of the many attractions and its incredible architecture, the city center was included in the list of the World Heritage by UNESCO.
Vienna was founded in 500 BC as a Celtic settlement. In the Middle Ages, Vienna was transformed into hub of Babenberg dynasty and in 1440 it became a secret capital of the Holy Roman Empire and a center of culture, science, music and fine cuisine. In 1805 Vienna became the capital of Austria and later of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It plays an important role in European politics; there was held the congress of Vienna in 1815. The city was divided into 23 administrative units. In order to be saved from possible attacks, the historic center of Vienna was surrounded by walls. They were demolished in 1857, thus the city grew and merged with the surrounding villages. On the place of the walls was built the extensive Ringshttrase Boulevard.
